Red Carpet Rye Fizz
If you plan to huddle around the television to watch the Academy Awards ceremony, you’ll need to fortify yourself with strong drink in order to endure a few of the less-focused acceptance speeches. But also, we’ve found that a good cocktail focuses one’s attention on equally good cinematography and the criticality of top-shelf production design. And, as a bonus, it helps one pronounce the name Yorgos Mavropsaridis.
Ingredients:
1 1/2 ounces Unsinkable Rye Whiskey
1/2 ounce fresh lemon juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup (equal parts water and sugar dissolved together)
2 ounces California sparkling wine or Champagne (if you must)
A dash of Grenadine (for a splash of red carpet color)
Instructions:
We’re shooting for staggering levels of Old Hollywood style here, so break out your finest champagne flutes.
In a shaker, combine the Unsinkable Rye, lemon juice, and simple syrup. Fill shaker with fresh ice and shake wildly, as if you haven’t got a care in this world.
Strain into the waiting champagne flute.
Gently top off the drink with the sparkling wine, Champagne, Prosecco — what have you.
If you’ve got something bright red like grenadine lying around, add a bar spoon and allow it to nestle gracefully at the bottom of your drink for a layered effect that mimics the iconic Oscars red carpet. You will think you are drinking glamour itself.
Garnish with a lemon twist, take a sip, and wonder why you never watch any of the nominated films for Documentary Short.
